We all know that the word "sit" is a command that a dog should know well. As a puppy, it's distraction after distraction that causes their attention to veer from a ball, to a child playing, to the food dish that is shiny and smells good. It is hard to imagine being a dog, or a puppy for that matter, with your nose no more than six inches from the ground. The best way to combat distractions is with a distraction that is better than the others around the pup.
He or she is still maturing and needs time to comprehend a command. "Sit", as easy as it sounds, confuses any dog on the first few tries. They may do it out of knowledge they've had since birth, but adding a command makes it complicated. With our method to "sit", all you need are a few minutes and some patience to achieve results 100% of the time. Repetition is key in this exercise.
Trying this exercise will help you bond with your dog and give you a better understanding of reaction when using a certain command. The best part about this exercise is the ability for you to try it anywhere at any time. There are no tools other than a leash and collar that are required for this exercise, making a simple walk around the block turn into a training session and the perfect amount of time for your pup to pick up on the exercise without burning them out on the newly introduced command.
STEP 1: Put a collar and leash on the pup.
STEP 2: The dog will need to be on the left side (heel position)
- Dog will not need to know the "heel" command as that comes after the "sit" command.
STEP 3: Lift slightly (applying light pressure) on the leash and use the command "sit" in a normal tone (repeat until "sit" is achieved).
STEP 4: Once the dog has responded, walk forward and repeat step 3. Do this until the first or second request is when "sit" is achieved.
**DO THIS FOR A MAXIMUM OF 15 MINUTES IF PUP IS 8 WEEKS - 2 YEARS OLD**
We do offer 1-hour consultations. Contact Cattail Retrievers for availability if you would like a lesson for your pup. Or, would like to send them to training for prime results?
